Not content with letting such a legend sit un-used and un-appreciated, the US Navy had one final destination for the Missouri. After this tour, the USS Missouri was de-commissioned one last time in 1992, remaining a part of the US Navy's reserve fleet.īy the time it faced its retirement, the USS Missouri had lived a long and legendary life, earning a total of 11 Battle Stars, and ingraining itself as an icon of not just the US Navy, but the very concept of Battleships themselves. After participating in Operation Desert Storm, the USS Missouri set sail for a final public tour at the end of 1991, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attacks which had started the conflict the mighty ship was born from. Even when anti-ship missiles were fired at the Missouri in retaliation, not a single attack managed to land a hit on the legendary battleship.īut, Battleships were no longer a central part of naval forces, and the Missouri's time was up. Firing 28 Tomahawk missiles at Iraqi targets in Kuwait, the Missouri would unleash its full power during Desert Storm, culminating in the firing of over 300 of its 16" shells, decimating targets with impunity. These upgrades weren't just for show, as the build up to Operation Desert Storm called on the mighty battleship's capabilities to be used in battle once more, and in the early months of 1991, the Missouri began its assault. Returning to service in 1986, the USS Missouri received several upgrades to modernize the mighty battleship, including Tomahawk cruise missiles, Stinger anti-aircraft missiles, and advanced Phalanx close-in weapons systems. Staying a force within the Korean War for several more years, the USS Missouri was finally decommissioned in 1955, but not for good. Arriving off the coast of North Korea, the Missouri unleashed its 16" cannons, bombarding the North Korean cities of Wonsan, Chonjin, and Tanchon with its incredible firepower. But the surrender had to take place somewhere, and that somewhere was the deck of the USS Missouri. On September 2nd of 1945, the world watched as images were broadcast from the Missouri's deck showing Japan officially surrendering, and WWII finally coming to a full close.īut this wouldn't be the end of the USS Missouri's service, and In 1950, after receiving an overhaul, the USS Missouri sailed to battle once more. But, even after the fighter plane directly impacted the ship, only minor damage was dealt, and the Missouri sailed on.Īfter just over a year in service, WWII came to an end as the Japanese surrendered. Despite such aggressive fighting, the only successful retaliation against the USS Missouri was a kamikaze attack. The Iwo Jima landings were a success, and the USS Missouri quickly moved on, unleashing its cannons at targets in Okinawa, and then the Japanese mainland itself. The USS Missouri set sail for Iwo Jima, where it let loose its massive cannons to support the American landings on the island to great effect. With great speed, and immense firepower, the USS Missouri got right to business joining the battle in the Pacific. But, come WWII, new and more advanced warships were on the prowl, leading to the creation of a new class of American battleships in 1943 - the Iowa Class. These American battleships would fare well during WWI, laying down nearly unmatched firepower. Playing catch-up, the US Navy finally was able to commission their own competitive Dreadnoughts to participate in the fighting of WWI - the New York Class. But, having been designed and launched before the Dreadnought, they soon were terribly outdated in their design. As is the course of most technological advancements, the rest of the world rushed to build and enter their own Dreadnoughts into service.Īlthough, as early as 1895, the USA had launched their own battleships, the Maine and Texas. Designed as a floating fortress, with a focus on maximum armor and un-paralleled firepower, the Dreadnought was revolutionary, shocking the world with its power, and becoming the name all early battleships would be referred to as. In 1906, the British HMS Dreadnought entered service, marking the beginning of a new era for warships.
